BREAKING NEWS
A critical cooperation has been launched under the AKYA Heavyweight Torpedo Project, one of Türkiye’s most important programs to strengthen the underwater warfare capabilities of the Turkish Naval Forces. ROKETSAN and Altınay Savunma Teknolojileri signed a contract for the supply of lithium-based battery systems to be used in the AKYA torpedo. The agreement, which entered into force during the signing ceremony held at SAHA 2026, aims to further increase the localization rate and system performance of the national torpedo program.
Developed with national resources in line with the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces, AKYA stands out as one of Türkiye’s most critical naval weapon systems in the heavyweight torpedo class. Designed to be launched from submarine platforms, the system provides deterrence and strike capability against underwater threats in the Blue Homeland. Under the new agreement, Altınay Savunma will carry out the serial production of AKYA’s high-power and high-energy-density lithium-based battery systems.
The battery system developed with Altınay Savunma’s engineering capabilities was designed by taking into account the demanding operational conditions of heavyweight torpedoes used by submarine platforms. With its high power density, the system supports AKYA’s speed and maneuverability. Its advanced energy management capability helps optimize mission duration, while its reliable performance under harsh maritime conditions contributes to high efficiency at the system level.
ROKETSAN Deputy General Manager Halid Bulut emphasized the importance of the domestic defense industry ecosystem during the signing ceremony. Bulut stated that ROKETSAN’s main priority is to maximize the localization and nationalization rate of the systems delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces. He described AKYA as the striking power of the Turkish Navy in the Blue Homeland and said they were pleased to integrate the engineering capabilities of valuable ecosystem stakeholders such as Altınay Savunma into strategic systems.
Altınay Savunma General Manager Z. Burak Mercan stated that the company is proud to be a trusted solution partner of ROKETSAN. Mercan emphasized that working in harmony with Türkiye’s foundation companies and contributing added value to strategic projects is among Altınay’s most important missions. He said they are proud to offer Altınay’s engineering strength to a project as vital as AKYA for the Turkish Naval Forces and expressed confidence that the lithium-based battery systems they developed will directly contribute to AKYA’s success in the field.
The battery supply agreement signed for AKYA is considered an important step toward Türkiye’s goal of full independence in critical subsystems. In modern naval warfare systems, not only the main platform but also energy, guidance, communication, sensor and control infrastructures must be developed through reliable domestic sources. In this context, the serial production of lithium-based battery systems with national capabilities will increase supply security and support the sustainable performance of AKYA.
The strategic agreement signed by ROKETSAN and Altınay Savunma at SAHA 2026 demonstrates the deepening cooperation between prime contractors and the private sector in critical defense technologies. Increasing the localization rate in the AKYA Project will contribute to making Türkiye’s capabilities in national submarine weapon systems permanent. This development will strengthen Türkiye’s deterrent power in the Blue Homeland while also enhancing the defense industry ecosystem’s joint development and serial production capabilities.
