The world’s largest aviation, space, and technology festival, TEKNOFEST, opened its doors this year in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Organized under the auspices of the TRNC Presidency and jointly carried out by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology and the Turkey Technology Team Foundation (T3 Foundation), the event takes place at the old Ercan Airport with the participation of 132 partner institutions. The festival continues to draw large crowds with its cutting-edge technological displays and hands-on experiences.
One of the major participants, HAVELSAN, is attracting attention at its stand with interactive systems and technology demonstrations. Visitors can experience parachute and shooting simulators that replicate real-life conditions, while young participants take part in the “Mühendis Genç” (Young Engineer) program. This initiative offers workshops on artificial intelligence, gaming, and defense technology, aiming to spark interest in engineering and innovation among the youth.
HAVELSAN’s General Manager Mehmet Akif Nacar emphasized that being at TEKNOFEST in Cyprus carries both symbolic and practical significance. “Cyprus was the birthplace of Turkey’s defense industry after the 1974 Peace Operation,” Nacar said. “Following the challenges faced in sourcing defense products, Turkish defense firms like HAVELSAN emerged. Being here today is both a tribute to that legacy and a contribution to the next generation of innovators.”
Beyond TEKNOFEST, HAVELSAN has an active presence in Cyprus through projects such as a Vessel Traffic Services Command and Control System and the security infrastructure for the TRNC Presidential Complex, including license plate and facial recognition systems. These initiatives enhance maritime safety, prevent smuggling, and strengthen local technological capabilities.
Nacar also pointed to the island’s international academic potential, stating, “Cyprus hosts many globally oriented universities with diverse student bodies. We aim to collaborate with them on entrepreneurship and innovation opportunities.” He added that TEKNOFEST is more than a technology fair — it is a platform that inspires young minds to build the future.
