BREAKING NEWS
France's Defense Ministry announced the successful first test launch of the new-generation M51.3 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). Conducted off the coast of Brittany from the Le Vigilant nuclear submarine following comprehensive maintenance and overhaul, the missile was launched without a warhead and in full compliance with international obligations. President Emmanuel Macron shared footage of the launch on social media, reiterating the emphasis on deterrence.
The M51.3 represents the latest variant of the missile system that entered service in October 2025 as a critical component of France's nuclear deterrence modernization program. Open-source data indicates the M51 family possesses an operational range exceeding 9,000 kilometers. Defense officials have stated that this new version extends the range beyond its predecessors. Submarine-launched ballistic missiles form the backbone of strategic nuclear deterrence, providing second-strike capability even under enemy attack.
France maintains a triad-based nuclear deterrence architecture utilizing air, sea, and ground-launched systems. Ocean-based deterrence is anchored by four ballistic missile submarines in its inventory. As the world's fourth-largest nuclear arsenal, the country allocates approximately 5.6 billion euros annually to maintain its strategic stockpile of 290 warheads. By comparison, the United Kingdom possesses 225 nuclear warheads, while the United States and Russia each maintain over 5,000.
Submarine-launched ballistic missiles have been developed since the 1960s and 1970s and are now widely employed by NATO members and other nuclear powers. France's M51 series has been in service since 1997 and has undergone multiple upgrades. The M51.3 version reflects technological advances and evolving threat assessments. Comparable systems include the U.S. Trident II D5 missile (9,400 km range) and the British Trident system using the same platform.
The test occurred amid regional tensions. Following Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent statement that Russia would defend the Kaliningrad region with nuclear weapons, this operation underscores France's strategic positioning. Macron continues the nuclear arsenal expansion and joint exercise initiative with European partners announced in March. This step forms part of efforts to strengthen European strategic autonomy.
