BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s defense industry continues to draw global attention by transforming technological achievements into sustainable export success. Speaking at the 5th Global Strategies Conference in Defense and Aerospace Industry, Osman Okyay, Chairman of the Board of the Defense and Aerospace Industry Manufacturers Association (SASAD) and Vice Chairman of the KALE Group, emphasized that Türkiye has entered the world’s top ten defense exporters with nearly USD 10 billion in exports. According to Okyay, this achievement reflects not only industrial capability but also strong coordination between the state, private sector, and end users.
Okyay underlined that defense exports differ significantly from other industries, as they require political will, long-term trust, and strategic cooperation. Türkiye’s rapid progress has attracted international interest, particularly in Europe. He noted that during his tenure on the board of the European defense and aerospace industry association, Türkiye’s rise was frequently questioned with admiration, highlighting the importance of cooperation among the Presidency of Defence Industries, the Ministry of National Defense, the Turkish Armed Forces, security forces, and the private sector.
One of the most critical pillars of this success is national jet engine capability. Kale Jet Motorları, operating under the KALE Group, develops and produces jet engines used in cruise missiles, loitering munitions, and kamikaze drones. Development efforts began in 2012, and after a decade of intensive work, the first engine was completed. Within the following two to three years, two additional engines were successfully introduced.
Today, these engines power cruise missile platforms developed by ROKETSAN and TÜBİTAK SAGE, including KARA ATMACA, ATMACA, ÇAKIR, and SOM. Beyond meeting domestic needs, Türkiye has also achieved a breakthrough in jet engine exports. As of 2025, engine deliveries have begun for a cruise missile project developed for the Brazilian Navy, with integration and flight testing currently underway.
Globally, only a limited number of companies are capable of developing and producing jet engines in this category, giving Türkiye a significant competitive advantage. Okyay stated that discussions are ongoing with 12–13 countries and companies regarding potential exports. In parallel, Kale Jet Motorları is developing four new jet engines simultaneously—an ambitious effort that reflects the company’s strong engineering capacity and motivation. These advancements are expected to further strengthen Türkiye’s position as a key player in the global defense industry.
