BREAKING NEWS
The Boran-8 International Marksman Competition held in Foça, İzmir, hosted the debut field demonstration of the "Drone Shield," developed under the coordination of ammunition manufacturer Turaç. The system represents a collaborative effort among four Turkish companies specializing in ammunition, firearms, robotics, mechanical engineering, algorithms, and electro-optical systems, alongside a university partner. Participants from 19 allied nations witnessed the presentation.
Turaç maintains a long-standing presence in Turkish defense ammunition production. The company has developed various caliber munitions for police and military security operations, establishing itself as a key player in the sector. The Drone Shield project exemplifies Turaç's strategy of combining its technical capabilities with other specialized organizations to deliver integrated solutions against contemporary threats. The company has participated in previous marksman competitions, continuously refining its product development process through iterative field testing.
The "Drone Shield" integrates two semi-automatic rifles firing 12-caliber anti-drone ammunition into an autonomous robotic turret. The system employs multiple sensor types to scan the target area, acquiring airborne threats from 600-800 meters distance. As the target approaches 150 meters, the system executes simultaneous fire, creating a metal cloud that neutralizes the drone. During the marksman competition, the system, mounted on a vehicle, autonomously detected and successfully engaged a simulated target suspended by drone.
Turkish defense industry has intensified focus on developing counter-unmanned aerial vehicle systems in recent years. Drone Shield addresses a critical capability gap in tactical air defense. The system offers rapid-response alternatives to conventional air defense solutions, providing localized protection with minimal footprint. From an indigenization perspective, the development of all major components—from ammunition design to control algorithms—by Turkish engineering teams demonstrates the sector's technological maturation.
Internationally, systems such as Israel's Kardom and U.S. C-UAS (Counter-UAS) platforms represent comparable autonomous air defense solutions. Drone Shield delivers similar rapid-reaction and autonomous target-tracking capabilities. Turaç management reported unexpectedly high interest from foreign delegations, including representatives from Belgium and Hungary. The company targets series production by year-end, with November testing planned before initiating export activities.
