BREAKING NEWS
Raytheon, a division of RTX, has secured a $20.7 billion contract with the US Department of Defense to substantially increase production capacity for AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. The agreement encompasses a five-year base period with an additional two-year extension option. Established under the Arsenal of Freedom initiative, this contract supports a minimum annual production target of 1,900 missiles and represents a strategic effort to address rising demand from the US military and NATO allies.
The AMRAAM system is a critical guided air-to-air missile platform for modern air defense and air superiority operations. Equipped with advanced radar guidance, electronic warfare resilience, and beyond-visual-range (BVR) engagement capability, it provides effective offensive potential in high-threat environments. The system is compatible with F-16, F-15, F-22, and F-35 fighter aircraft, and can also be integrated into the NASAMS air defense platform. As a fifth-generation missile family, AMRAAM has achieved over 7,000 successful live-fire tests and is currently in the inventories of 44 nations worldwide.
From a global defense industry perspective, this development reflects international trends in missile technology advancement. Turkish defense firms such as ROKETSAN and ASELSAN are investing in comparable guidance and electronic warfare technologies through their own air-to-air missile programs, including GÖKDOĞAN and BOZDOĞAN variants. The US capacity expansion demonstrates the growing global demand for NATO-standard missile systems and the competitive landscape in this strategic category. Turkey's indigenous missile development efforts serve objectives of technological independence and localization within this critical weapons category.
The AMRAAM program's history extends to the mid-1980s. The initial operational variant (AIM-120A) saw combat deployment during the 1991 Gulf War, followed by subsequent AIM-120B, C, and D versions. Recent variants enable continuous capability updates through software modifications to counter emerging and future threats. Raytheon's near-doubling of production capacity between 2024 and 2025 underscores the program's strategic importance and NATO's escalating weapons requirements. The company plans to achieve this target through investments in supply chain optimization and manufacturing facility expansion.
In the global defense market, AMRAAM maintains a leading position among comparable systems. Serving as a missile component for the Patriot air defense system and integrated into the NASAMS platform, AMRAAM plays a vital role in European air defense architecture. Raytheon's contract reinforces US defense industrial capacity while ensuring reliable supply chains for allied partners. NATO members, including Turkey, are positioned to benefit from this expanded production capacity for advanced missile systems.
