The year 2023 marked a historic period for Türkiye’s defense industry, filled with groundbreaking innovations and firsts. With projects developed entirely through domestic and national resources, Türkiye not only advanced its technological capabilities but also reinforced its strategic independence in defense. The year began with a major step in electronic warfare: the delivery of the MERTER Backpack Tactical Field Electronic Attack System. On the land systems front, the New Altay Tank and Next-Generation Fırtına Howitzer enhanced battlefield firepower, while the KAPGAN unmanned ground vehicle and the 8x8 ARMA II showcased new-generation capabilities tailored for modern combat.
The use of locally produced armor steel, along with projects such as the 8x8 Wheeled Recovery and Carrier Vehicles and the YÖRÜK 4x4 Tactical Armored Vehicle, highlighted the rapid growth in Türkiye’s armored vehicle sector. In the air domain, 2023 was truly a turning point. The ATAK-2 heavy attack helicopter and the ANKA-3 unmanned combat aerial vehicle successfully completed their maiden flights, demonstrating Türkiye’s rising strength in aviation and aerospace.
The naval sector also saw significant achievements. The multi-purpose amphibious assault ship TCG ANADOLU officially entered service, while production of the İSTİF-class frigates advanced, strengthening Türkiye’s maritime presence and deterrence capabilities in regional waters.
Additionally, the mass production of national air defense missiles and record-breaking defense exports further underlined Türkiye’s growing role in the global defense market. With these developments, 2023 stands out not only as a year of technological advancement but also as one of international recognition and success for Türkiye’s defense industry.
