BREAKING NEWS
The U.S. Department of State has approved a major defense sale that directly impacts security in the Balkans. According to the announcement, North Macedonia will acquire a total of 54 Stryker armored combat vehicles in various configurations, under a deal valued at $190 million. In addition to the vehicles, the package also includes spare parts and a wide range of supporting equipment.
North Macedonia’s request covers Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicles (ICV), Command Vehicles (CV), and Mortar Carrier Vehicles (MCV). The deal also incorporates additional systems such as M2A1 .50 caliber machine guns, M6 smoke mortars, Harris radios, the Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS), advanced GPS receivers, and AN/VAS-5 driver vision systems. These systems are expected to significantly enhance the operational effectiveness and battlefield performance of the vehicles.
In its statement, the U.S. emphasized that the sale will not alter the fundamental military balance in the region but will strengthen NATO’s security framework in the Balkans. It was also noted that the acquisition will enable North Macedonia to respond more effectively to potential threats, while contributing to overall regional stability.
The primary contractor for the program will be General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), with production taking place in Canada. GDLS will be responsible for delivering modern Stryker variants tailored to the operational needs of the North Macedonian Armed Forces. This step marks one of the most significant milestones in North Macedonia’s military modernization process since its NATO accession.
