BREAKING NEWS
Turkey’s defense industry has reached a critical milestone in developing domestic engines and power transmission systems. Under the leadership of the Presidency of Defense Industries, ongoing projects aim to meet the engine needs of both land and air platforms with national resources. These efforts are divided into two main categories: internal combustion engines and turbine engines.
In the field of internal combustion engines, development spans a wide spectrum—from the 170-horsepower Anka UAV engine to the 1500-horsepower Altay main battle tank engine. Among these, the PD170 engine stands out as a strategic breakthrough, enhancing the performance of UAVs such as Anka and Aksungur. For land platforms, domestic engine development continues for armored vehicles like Vuran, Kirpi 2, and Pars, with endurance and performance tests successfully completed. The Utku project also aims to deliver a domestic engine and transmission system for the Fırtına howitzer and next-generation light armored vehicles.
For heavier platforms, the Batu project is focused on producing an indigenous engine for the Altay tank, reinforcing Turkey’s independence in armored warfare. In turbine engines, the KTJ-3200 engine is being developed to power critical missile systems such as Atmaca and SOM. Additionally, major projects are underway for the Gökbey helicopter and the National Combat Aircraft (MMU), with engine development and testing advancing at full speed. These programs not only address Turkey’s immediate defense needs but also shape its long-term strategic planning.
Altogether, these engine initiatives reflect Turkey’s determination to reduce foreign dependency and achieve technological autonomy. Developing indigenous engine technologies enhances the operational capabilities of the Turkish Armed Forces while strengthening Turkey’s position in the global defense industry.
