BREAKING NEWS
Machinery and Chemical Industry Inc. is entering a new phase of large-scale industrial transformation aimed at expanding production capacity and upgrading its technological infrastructure. According to recent public statements, MKE is currently carrying out a $1.5 billion investment program focused on new facilities, modernization of existing lines, stronger automation, and serial production infrastructure for next-generation ammunition and weapon systems. The broader goal is to increase responsiveness to both domestic military requirements and rising international demand.
MKE General Manager İlhami Keleş has stated that the institution continues conventional production across 10 factories in 8 different locations. However, the changing threat environment is making it necessary to modernize this production structure both in scale and in technology. As a result, MKE is not only investing in upgrades to its existing industrial base, but also preparing infrastructure for smart munitions, new-generation weapons, and high-volume production. In that sense, the current process represents more than a simple capacity increase; it reflects a much broader industrial transformation.
One of the most striking aspects of the investment plan is the projected increase in 155 mm artillery ammunition production. According to Keleş, MKE is pursuing an investment that would raise capacity in this segment by 5,400 percent. That figure is based on the company leadership’s public statement, and I have not found a publicly available independent official capacity table that breaks it down in detail. Still, other reporting from the same period also confirms major expansion in ammunition, explosives, rocket propellants, and critical energetic materials. In particular, the Hüseyin Kahya Energetic Materials Factory in Kırıkkale is expected to significantly increase domestic output of propellants, powder, and related materials once fully operational.
Another strategic pillar of the program is reducing foreign dependence. MKE is one of the rare companies capable of managing a wide range of critical processes under one roof, from explosive raw materials to final ammunition, from steel transformation to heavy weapon production. New facilities under construction in Kırıkkale are expected to produce nitrocellulose, powder, rocket propellants, and several key energetic materials domestically for the first time. This is especially important from the standpoint of supply security during wartime or periods of international disruption.
The company is also signaling a more assertive export posture. İlhami Keleş has said MKE is targeting exports in the range of $500–600 million this year. The same statements indicate accelerating demand from Gulf countries and official interest from states such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. MKE has already signed agreements in Qatar involving a joint venture with Barzan Holding and the TOLGA close air defense system, while a separate memorandum has been announced for joint production of TOLGA and 122 mm rocket ammunition in Saudi Arabia. This points to a broader shift in which MKE is moving beyond its traditional role as a state-owned supplier for domestic needs and toward a regional model based on co-production and exports.
Overall, the $1.5 billion investment drive suggests that MKE is preparing for a very different industrial profile in the near future. If the majority of these projects are completed by the final quarter of the year as indicated, the company could emerge with substantially greater production depth, stronger technological capability, and a more visible international footprint. How fully that vision materializes will become clearer through factory commissioning schedules, real output figures, and signed export contracts in the months ahead.
