BREAKING NEWS
Amid heightened security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Latvia has taken a major step to strengthen its defense capabilities. The Latvian Ministry of Defense signed a $180 million agreement with the United States to acquire the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) along with MGM-140 ATACMS long-range missiles.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced the deal on social media, highlighting that it would significantly enhance Latvia’s firepower while reinforcing the country’s strategic partnership with the US. He also emphasized that this move will contribute to NATO’s collective defense capabilities, ensuring stronger deterrence in the region.
The US State Department had already approved the sale of HIMARS systems to Latvia in October 2023. With this procurement, Latvia seeks not only to bolster its national defense but also to play a more assertive role in regional security. The deployment of these advanced systems is expected to increase deterrence against potential threats, particularly in the Baltics.
The M142 HIMARS, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is a highly mobile, truck-mounted multiple rocket launcher system. It is capable of firing a wide range of rockets and missiles at varying ranges, including the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) with a range of up to 500 kilometers. Its flexibility and mobility make it a valuable asset for modern combat scenarios.
Latvia’s investment in HIMARS and ATACMS represents the beginning of a new phase in the country’s defense strategy. By integrating advanced US-made systems, Latvia strengthens not only its own security but also the broader NATO defense posture in Eastern Europe.
