BREAKING NEWS
The Kenyan military has decided to bolster its operational capabilities against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab by procuring "Hızır" armored vehicles developed by Turkish defense company Katmerciler. According to Kenya Defense Forces spokesperson Zipporah Kioko, the vehicles will provide the army with much-needed protected mobility in its counterterrorism missions. Local media reported that the deal is valued at around 7.7 billion Kenyan shillings, approximately 518 million Turkish lira.
Introduced in 2016 by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Hızır has quickly gained recognition both domestically and internationally. Designed and manufactured entirely by Turkish engineers, the vehicle features a 4x4 configuration and a 400-horsepower engine, making it one of the most powerful tactical wheeled armored combat vehicles in its class. Its high level of protection against mines and improvised explosive devices makes it especially effective in asymmetric warfare conditions.
Built to NATO standards, the Hızır has successfully passed all performance and blast tests. Independent international testing organizations have also confirmed its superior mine protection, further solidifying its reliability. With enhanced ballistic protection and high maneuverability, the vehicle is well-suited to operate in difficult terrain, providing Kenya’s forces with significant tactical advantages.
Beyond being an armored personnel carrier, the Hızır stands out as a versatile platform. It can be configured as a command-and-control vehicle, CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) unit, reconnaissance vehicle, ambulance, border security vehicle, or armed carrier equipped with a variety of weapon systems. This adaptability ensures that the Hızır can meet a wide range of operational requirements. Kenya’s procurement of these vehicles represents not only a step forward in its counterterrorism strategy but also a milestone in strengthening the presence of the Turkish defense industry in Africa.
