The International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2019 has officially opened its doors at the TÜYAP Fair and Congress Center in Istanbul. Held under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and hosted by the Ministry of National Defense, the fair is recognized as one of the world’s largest gatherings in the defense sector. The opening ceremony was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Vice President Fuat Oktay, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar, Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank, Defense Industries President İsmail Demir, as well as numerous foreign representatives. With this broad participation, Istanbul once again became a global hub for defense and security cooperation.
IDEF 2019 serves as a major platform for promotion, marketing, and international collaboration in the defense industry. This year, a total of 1,061 companies are participating, including 576 foreign and 485 Turkish firms. Among the Turkish participants, 250 are SMEs, showcasing the depth and diversity of Turkey’s defense production capabilities. The fair hosts 150 official delegations from 68 countries, comprising a total of 550 delegates, including 68 high-level decision makers—further demonstrating IDEF’s global significance.
During the event, 4,420 scheduled business meetings are set to take place, and 70 signing ceremonies are planned. These ceremonies are expected to mark new partnerships between local and international companies, strengthen ongoing projects, and lay the groundwork for long-term strategic cooperation. Thus, IDEF 2019 functions as more than just an exhibition—it acts as a vital negotiation and agreement platform for the global defense community.
Many of the products developed by the Turkish defense industry are being showcased for the first time at this year’s fair. The exhibition includes armored combat vehicles, tactical armored vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles, rockets, guided missiles, infantry weapons, military simulators, and explosive ordnance disposal equipment. Additionally, upgraded versions of previously developed systems are also being introduced, allowing visitors to observe the latest technological advancements firsthand.
The extensive institutional support behind the fair reflects its scope and importance. Numerous ministries—including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Treasury and Finance, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Industry and Technology, Ministry of Trade, and Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure—along with the Turkish Armed Forces, General Staff, Land, Naval and Air Forces Commands, Gendarmerie General Command, General Directorate of Security, Coast Guard Command, Istanbul Governorship, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, TOBB, KOSGEB and industry associations all contribute to the organization. This unified effort demonstrates both the strength of Türkiye’s defense ecosystem and its growing influence in the global defense market.
Running until May 3rd, IDEF 2019 will continue to serve as a central venue for defense technology exhibitions, international cooperation discussions, and presentations of Türkiye’s defense industry vision. The agreements and partnerships emerging from the fair are expected to significantly enhance Türkiye’s export potential and reinforce its strategic standing within the global defense landscape.
