The Belgian Parliament’s Military Procurement Commission has approved four major acquisition programs aimed at restoring and strengthening the country’s land-based firepower. At the heart of the package is the procurement of 19 CAESAR NG 155mm self-propelled howitzers from France. With this new approval, Belgium increases its total CAESAR NG orders to 28, including 9 systems previously contracted with deliveries planned for 2027. Known for their wheeled high-mobility design and advanced fire-control systems, the CAESAR NG platforms are expected to provide the Belgian Army with enhanced rapid deployment and “shoot-and-scoot” capabilities.
Belgium had retired its American-made M109 self-propelled howitzers during the 2000–2020 restructuring phase, creating a critical gap in its mobile artillery force. The new generation CAESAR NG systems, equipped with 155mm/52 caliber guns, will restore this capability by offering extended range and precision fire support. Their compatibility with modern network-centric warfare systems will also allow faster target acquisition and more accurate engagements in joint operations.
Beyond artillery, the approved procurement package includes 24 Griffon armored mortar carriers and 14 mini unmanned aerial systems. These additions are part of Belgium’s ongoing strategic partnership with France, which also covers the integration of Griffon and Jaguar armored vehicles to enhance interoperability between the two armies. While the Griffon mortar carriers will provide close fire support, the mini drones will significantly improve battlefield reconnaissance and target acquisition capabilities.
The next stage will see the proposals submitted to the Council of Ministers for final approval, followed by contract negotiations. With the first nine CAESAR NG howitzers scheduled to enter service in 2027, the delivery schedule for the remaining 19 units will be determined in upcoming agreements. This procurement effort underscores Belgium’s commitment to strengthening its deterrence posture and operational readiness in a shifting European security landscape.
