BREAKING NEWS
The domestically developed unmanned ground vehicle Baybars has attracted significant attention following the completion of its first prototype. Created by Istanbul University–Cerrahpaşa Lecturer Safa Balekoğlu and a four-person engineering-design team over a period of 1.5 years, Baybars was initially intended for disaster-response missions. However, its proven performance has expanded its potential use to a wide range of security and operational fields. Capable of entering hazardous areas, the vehicle provides real-time intelligence during bomb disposal, reconnaissance and other security operations.
One of Baybars’ standout features is its modular wheel system, which transforms into a leg-like structure when it encounters obstacles, allowing it to climb over challenging surfaces. This innovative approach eliminates the speed limitations of traditional tracked systems and offers superior maneuverability, particularly in rough terrain. With its 360-degree movement capability, Baybars can quickly change direction in confined spaces, making it effective in both open and enclosed environments.
To solve the common issue of “signal loss” in remote-controlled ground vehicles, Baybars is equipped with four Wi-Fi repeaters. These create a communication chain that maintains the operator’s link with the vehicle, especially inside buildings, tunnels or obstructed areas. Patent applications for both the expandable wheel mechanism and the communication-chain system have been submitted, and the team expects favorable results after expert review.
In addition to ground mobility, Baybars can operate on water thanks to its lightweight 7-kilogram structure. Powered by four electric motors, the vehicle can perform tasks for up to two hours without interruption. Its 1080p night-vision camera enables clear image transmission during nighttime missions, while its audio and video communication capabilities give operators real-time situational awareness. With these advanced features, Baybars stands as a significant milestone in Türkiye’s growing national defense technology ecosystem.
